Teaching your Dog the ‘Wait’ Command

Last week I showed you a video of Freddy learning ‘leave it.’ That same day we also worked on waiting at the door before going out. Since then, I’m super excited to announce that Freddy got adopted-yay! We only had him for a mere 10 days and it just goes to show how much you can teach a dog in a short amount of time with patience and consistency.

Teaching your dog to wait can be used in so many different scenarios. You can teach them how to wait for their dinner, how to wait to get in or out of the car, and obviously, how to wait before going outside. In each of these situations, the wait command teaches impulse control.

Teaching your dog to wait for their dinner teaches them respect and boundaries. It can also prevent food aggression by knowing that you control their food, but will always provide it. Wait getting out of the car can prevent them from getting loose in a parking lot, or worse injured by an oncoming car depending on where you are at. Waiting before going outside can hugely curb children being ‘run over’ by a dog that rushes outside. It can also prevent door dashing.

Check out the video to see how easy it is to teach your dog this simple, but oh so important behavior!
