Chronicles of Fostering

Rena’s Happily Ever After

If you’re looking for the Reader’s Digest version of Rena’s story here it is: she went home today, and not with us. If you’re dying to hear more you can read about how our day went below!

After my first blog post about about Serena, volunteers from the local shelter shared her story with other volunteers. From this, a volunteer with One Love Pit Bull Foundation saw her story. One Love advocates for Pit Bulls and partners with Maricopa County to give the dogs exposure to get adopted, provides shelter enrichment, and community outreach to spread the importance of adopting and helping Pit Bulls.

This particular volunteer, Ashsuire, had been working with Micah, who is a young high school teacher that has been looking for the perfect dog. After his parents recently lost their Leonberger, they found their German Shepherd needing a new playmate, so Micah thought it was time to find his dog. He was looking for a dog that would make a good hiking and running buddy, but would also get along with small and large dogs. So Ashsuire, from One Love, who had always loved Serena reached out to see if she might be a good fit.

I was so excited that my story about her reached the right person. I thought it sounded like a perfect fit considering her favorite thing to do is just run and be outside. So we met Micah at the shelter this morning and he was smitten almost immediately. I told him how amazing she was and everything else that we had learned about her in the week she was with us.

Rena will live with a Corgi/Chihuahua mix and get to spend days at Micah’s parent’s house. Here, she’ll have a yard with a dog door and another dog to play with. I think she’ll love getting to go to pet friendly patios, hiking and running with someone who is actually a runner, and not me flailing around in the backyard with her.

I gave Micah my information and told him to never hesitate to reach out to me if he had any questions or needed any help with her. I told him that I owe it to her to make sure she never steps foot in the shelter again, but I truly believe this is her happily ever after. She curled right into their laps for love and walked out the door with them, never looking back, and at the end of the day, what more could we ask for?

We’ll give ourselves and our pups the week to reset and then look into helping the next dog in need. So stay tuned to @nonstopdogtalk on Instagram or Randi-Lea on Facebook for more fostering chronicles!
